Bike Ride Geology of the Region

Join professor Dave Dolak for a unique bicycle-level perspective of the Indiana Dunes National Park. Dave is an avid cyclist and has studied the geology of the region for over 30 years. The highlights of the interpretive ride include views along the lake, and visiting Mount Baldy and the Heron Rookery. Learn about the fascinating history that the land tells us about the ending of the last ice age and the formation of the Valparaiso Moraine and the ancient beach ridges of Lake Michigan.

The ride is approximately 20 miles in length.

Notes

• This event starts at the U.S. Geological Survey parking lot located at the corner of U.S. Highway 12 and East State Park Road (Kemil Road / 300E). This is the site of the old visitor center.
• Please bring water and snacks.
• The ride distance is approximately 20 miles. Most of the ride will be on lightly traveled, paved county roads with one brief section of well-graded unpaved surface. As with all road riding, bright visible clothing and/or reflectors and lights are recommended.
• Please arrive at 8:30 am to be able to start the ride at 9:00 am.
• A helmet is required to participate in the event.
• Please make sure that your bike is in good working condition.
