Paddle with a Ranger: Heron Rookery

Limited seating is available. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your registration so another participant may join. Registrants will be placed in their selected boat type, though assignments may be adjusted for safety.
Event Overview
Kayak down the Mississippi River with a National Park Service ranger and experience the river from a new perspective. This four‑mile paddle begins at the Carl W. Kroening Nature Center and passes the future Upper Harbor Terminal Redevelopment site and a heron rookery before concluding at Boom Island Park. Herons generally leave their nests by late July.
Transportation
Participants must manage their own transportation. The paddle begins at North Mississippi Regional Park and ends at Boom Island Park. Bringing two cars and a partner is recommended—leave one vehicle at Boom Island Park and drive together to the starting point. Rideshare, taxi, or public transit may also be used.
Registration Includes
- One seat in the selected kayak, a paddle, and a PFD provided by Paddle Share.
- Tandem kayak spots must be reserved with a partner.
- A tandem kayak may not be reserved by a single participant.
Weather & Preparation
Programs proceed rain or shine unless heavy rain or lightning requires cancellation. Decisions are made at least two hours prior to start time. Bring sun protection, insect repellent, rain gear, snacks, and water. Binoculars are encouraged. Avoid leaving valuables in vehicles.
Additional Details
Personal boats cannot be accommodated. This program is intended for experienced paddlers comfortable on moving water. Due to route hazards, it is not recommended for beginners. Beginners may prefer the Pickerel Lake Paddle Share station.
Age Requirements
Participants must be 18 or older. Youth under 18 may attend only if in a tandem kayak with an adult from the same household.
